It seems unthinkable for mid-1980s Brits considering a smallish combatant with Exocet to 'not be worth attacking', never mind that that's not even her primary role!

yes but the concept was going to be the AOR's were going to provide the Helicopters and would be equipped with VLS seawolf hence the Fort Victoria class.

OK, so, the 100m "Early Design" referred to in the discussions to Bryson.

[ img ]

Assumed that 100m is the overall length, as that squares with the other designs shown for comparison.

Needed to distort the superstructure slightly to get an integer number of decks in.

The quadruple Exocet launcher is based on "Generic" (i.e. re-named) equipment data we were given for our ship design exercise as students. It matches the launcher shown in the drawing. Not quite happy with it, though.

The Boss should be back in next week, so we will see if this matches his memory.

What plant? I find the twin screws somewhat surprising on such an austere design, unless it were direct-drive diesel or something.

The EH 101 isn't a plausible option in that last design. In fact, her hangar would not have been able to house the SH-3 Sea King! Look at my Type22s to see compare the relative sizes - and height of the hangars of Batch1 vs Batch2; Series2!
Otherwise it really looks nice, though maybe you might want to use the RHIB from the Type22 instead, it being more accurate.

may I ask where you see an hangar? none of the three designs seems to have one......

Certainly the aft superstructure on the 100 meter design looks like one! The helo is still too large and too heavy, whatever...

Answers to correspondents...

Machinery plant for MoD main-line studies was always GODLAG. In this case, two upperdeck DG spaces forward and aft with a GT machinery room in the hull amidships and an electric motor room aft of that, under the aft DG space. This was developed during the T24-T25 studies. Twin shafts on all the designs, as far as I am aware. Twin shafts are potentially easier to quieten (lower propeller loading).

None of the early designs had a hangar. They have an upperdeck magazine for reloading torpedoes and facilities for refuelling helicopters. The Fort-II class would provide hangar and maintenance facilities.

Note that the ability to support EH-101 in this fashion was not a real driver on the design - until the hangar was added. What had more effect was adding Sea King capability, as a fall back if SKR/EH-101 fell through. The tailwheel configuration on Sea King means it actually needs a longer flightdeck - and the final Type 23s have this capability. Of course, EH-101 grew more than a thing that grows a lot, as can be seen by some of the "untidiness" at the back end of a Type 23...

I'm not sure which RiB these ships actually had. You're right that it should be a smaller one. I'm going to re-draw the crane, too, as I scaled it from the paintings - which showed more detail - but that makes it bigger than the one shown in the drawings.

bezobrazov, which RHIB are you referring to? I found discussions of new RHIB models but nothing specifically RN.
