As presented at Warship 2009: Air Power at Sea.

[ img ]

Immediately forward of the EH-101 is a lift which, when down forms the lower deck of a hangar for the two aircraft shown. A mission bay is included on the centreline, essentially an extension of the hangar to the stern. There may be a stern door, but it is not clear.

The hangar is closed by a door, which rotates out of the way to allow the lift to be raised. The flight deck is surrounded by a catwalk to allow the deletion of flight deck nets, and the lower superstructure reduces flight deck turbulence. The mast has an ARTISAN-class MRR inside an enclosure.

Hmm nice design. But I thought Deck Elevator onboard regular Surface Combatants isn't a good idea...

Nice to see but the technical aspects of the concept leave alot to be desired the military tend to like the KISS approach.....Keep It Simple Stupid

Well, yes and no. Remember that the Tribal class had quite complicated helicopter arrangements, and AAW missile systems were more complicated than the guns they replaced - but in both cases the complexity gave increased capability. The problem here is that the UDH doesn't seem to offer much that couldn't be gained another way. Following the instructions in the annex of the paper should reduce the turbulence from a conventional hangar block, and a ship of this size could quite easily take a large mission bay in the superstructure amidships - although this would require some accommodation to be below the flight deck.
