After several months' worth of on-again off-again work... --- This is BALTIMORE (CA-68) in October of 1944, at the conclusion of a refit period at the Mare Island Navy Yard. The ship is camouflaged in Measure 33/16D. This scheme featured Pale Grey (5-P), Haze Grey (5-H), and Navy Blue (5-N) on the vertical surfaces, with a deck pattern of Deck Blue (20-B) and Ocean Gray (5-O). Most published sources incorrectly show BALTIMORE in the Measure 32 colors. BALTIMORE's 1944 refit period reworked the vent structures around the funnels, creating a blockier appearance that distinguishes the later iterations of the class. Anti-aircraft battery increases and radar modifications also took place. BATLIMORE's SK air search antenna, previously mounted on the mainmast, has been moved to a new platform on the foremast. Two SG surface search antennas sit at the topmasts. The mainmast platform has been left empty, but prominent waveguides are visible in the yard photos so it's likely this mast was being prepared to receive a height finder or additional air search set in a later refit. Most of the BALTIMORE class ships had received an SP heightfinder antenna at this position by 1945. BALTIMORE would survive the war, going on to serve in the post war USN, before finally being sold for scrap in 1972. |

Woo! B-More represent! She's a gorgeous ship. Shame it wasn't finished in time for the competition. Or, as Golle has said, not a shame for the rest of us. |

The typical excellence we've come to expect from your late-WW2 drawings. Great drawing, but the research and attention to detail are better than the drawing. |
