The Destuctor (mean “destroyer” in Spanish) was projected by Captain Fernando Villaamil (death in the battle of Santiago), as torpedo gunboat or torpedoboat destroyer. Was the first ship of its kind in history, and so successful that was imitated by all the navies and his name baptized the new type of ship.
The Destroyer did not participate in the Spanish-American war because it's assigned to the defense of Cartagena. He was decommissioned in 1908.
