During the 1950's the RN modified some old destroyers as frigates, Type 15 were elaborate conversions and so expensive. A need for a cheaper version arose, resulting in Type 16. The South African had taken the idea and converted the 'W' class destroyer Simon van der Stel (formerly HMS Whelp), in somewhat modified fashion giving the destroyer a wide hangar with two Wasp helicopters, and replaced the old DCT III type fire control system with an Italian system The result is as follows |

Just a minor nitpick, but shouldn't the text read D237 Simon van der Stel rather than SAN Simon van der Stel? |

Excellent cover of a little known warship Plaudits aside only a couple of queries: I thought it was SAS and not SAN? Also, I've looked at photo's and I just can't see how they could fit two Wasps into that hangar |

SAN is South African Navy, SAS South African Ship (or Scandinavian Air Service )The hangar was wide (30ft), so two folded Wasps are narrow enough, the hull width being 8ft 8in (2.64 m), so it could fit. |
