The Momi and Wakatake were two classes of Destroyers built for the IJN for the Hachi-Hachi Kantai. Originally, 28 units of the Momi and 23 for the Wakatake classes were planned, but after the ratification of the Washington Naval Treaty that number was cut to 21 for the former and just 8 for the latter. The Momi-class was a development of the Enoki second-class destroyers, relying on the same basic hull. Three boilers powering Parsons direct-drive turbines gave the ships a top speed of 36-knots. Armament was composed of three Type3 120mm/45 guns in single mounts, two 7.7mm machine guns and four 533 mm torpedo tubes in twin sets. The Wakatake-class destroyers were essentially slightly modified Momi-class ships with a deeper draft to improve handling characteristics in heavy seas, particularly against rolling. Weaponry layout, general arrangement and silhouette were all identical with the Momi class. Wakatake as of 1922: When built, the Wakatake class Destroyers were given numbers instead of names. Wakatake, which was originally to be named Kikyo, was instead named Dai-2-Gō Kuchikukan (Destroyer n°2). This proved to be unpopular with the crews and was a constant source of confusion in communications. On August 1st 1928 all units were given names, the lead ship thus beign renamed Wakatake. Tentative plan, not yet finalized, more drawings will come at a alter date: Momi Class: - Momi as of 1920 - Ashi as of 1925 - Hasu as of 1943 - Kiku as of 1943 - Tsuta as of 1943 - Fuji as of 1944 Wakatake Class: - Wakatake as of 1922 (done) - Yugao as of 1944 |
