Built by the Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan she was launched on 10 July 1968 and delivered to the Navy on 1 August 1969 as the USNS Melville (T-AGOR 14). She was in turn chartered to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography for operation. She was originally built with a length of 75 meters, however after being modernized in the early 1990s, her hull was lengthened and a new propulsion system was installed. I will show this at a later date .... |

It's not a boat davit but an A-frame. |

I'm not quite sure but it might be a good idea to check the scale, because the wiki article about RV Melville says it's 279 feet long, which makes 558 pixels in SB scale, while yours is only 490 pixels. |

279 feet / 85 meters is the length after her 1990's overhaul. They cut the ship in half and added about 30 feet amidships for extra laboratory space, endurance (fuel) and berthing space. They also took the time to switch from cycloidal propulsion to Z drives. I am currently working on her post refit configuration that shows these changes. |
