Ah- to have seen the look on Joseph Enright's face when he uped 'scope and seen that monster rolling toward him... and even better, to have seen the look on his face when he came back up hours later, looking at nothing but an oil slick and knowing he'd just sank a flattop that Japan wasn't even supposed to have. |

Had to be from the Shizuo Fukui sketch... the only photo I can find of her is a pitiful long-distance shot of her in Tokyo Bay. |

Absolutely wonderful drawing...well done! There are only three known photos of this vessel: the broadside shot Carthaginian mentioned, one taken around the same date by a B-29 (which gives you the idea of the clarity), and also one of her in drydock during conversion (also an aerial shot). Oceanographer Robert Ballard has requested permission to look for her from the Japanese government at least three times, but has been turned down each time. According to rumor, local fishermen know exactly where she is; for a small fee they'll let their charter parties take a peek at the wreck via sonar. No word on how she lies on the ocean bottom or at what depth, though. -Matt |
