Post subject:  Suffren-class DDGs - Late Versions

A couple of weeks ago I had a pleasant communication with my friend at SB, Brockpaine. I had noticed that he had the Suffren-class DDGs on his To Do-list. As we talked about it, he kindly mailed me a 'skeleton'-drawing of the ship that I could use to draw the class in their late appearances. Said and done, here's first the Suffren as she appeared during the 1990s, and next is her sister, (or brother?!? Hmmm...) 8-) the Duquesne as she looked like after her major (and last) refit between 1999-2001, and prior to being converted into a Midshipsmans' training ship, in 2007, and duly being placed in reserve. The Duquesne is still in commission, though with reduced power (only half her (his?!?) machinery is currently operational, and partly disarmed (Malafon, 20 mm AA gone and Masurca only used for practice rounds.) The Suffren was decommissioned in 2001, although she can still be seen, in a sadly deplete condition, at the Arsenal in Toulon. Altogether an impressive record for a pair commissioned as early as 1965, incidentally my year of birth! Today, the Duquesne holds the unenviable record of being the only surviving steam-powered European surface combatant of any significant size remaining! She marks the sad but tranquil passing of a 150 year old tradition.

A note on the credits. I've credited both me and Brock equally, but decided to put our tags in an alphabetical order. Brock agrees on this arrangement.

Enough small talk. Here's firstly the Suffren, followed by the Duquesne:

Very well done indeed. I just adore the look of these ships - along with the M-class frigates, they're probably the prettiest post-WWII ships in existence.

Hot damn she looks good.

The only change I would make is to stick a Masurca on the launcher per shipbucket standards.

Ahhh...I understand you, Tim, but, it kinda looks cleaner this way. Honestly, nothing prevents you from doing it though, if you care. I don't mind! - But thanks for those very nice words! Gonna sleep well on those tonite! 8-) ;)

Very nice, but there's a few errors.
You've coloured in the area between the gun barrels and the coolant hose.
The VDS hoist has a couple of white areas that should be grey.

You're right about the color slip on the gun-houses; however, I'm only indirectly responsible, since the turrets were 'delivered' this way and, thus I can only assume blame for not having noticed that. Easy fix though! As for the VDS, I've studied it quite thoroughly before 'assembling' it, so, unless you can point to the particular areas, it's done as it should be done!

Nicly done! what more to say!

It is as old as the Oslo class HNoMS Narvik, which also have steam engines, so she's probably the other old ship but not close to being as large as the French. She is a museum ship now, she had the engines running until she was taken out of service.

one of the last Oslo Class Frigate was taken out of service in 2007. and as I understand she was completely active with its guns and glue, so long as the engine would work!
