I have noticed the great affection for the Okie Boat, when visiting the crew association page (-s). She seem to have been a very happy ship! And I quite understand your sentiment, Seeker36340! I'd be very sorry too, especially considering how she ended her 60 year life!

Firstly Bezzo this is an incredible thread full of very, very good drawings of those ships. I've grown fond of the USS Little Rock after seeing her as a youngster at Buffalo N.Y.
A slight deviation from the topic (sorry Bezzo) is to congratulate our esteemed colleague DP and Mrs. DP for their marriage.

This is the USS Providence (CLG-6) as she appeared during her last, but perhaps most important service; her three-year association with the US First Fleet (1970-73)

As can be seen from the drawing, there are considerable differences between her and the USS Springfield. Their radar and electronics make-up is substantially different; the Providence was the only missile cruiser never to receive the SPS-37A planar radar dish. Instead she, at first had the SPS-17 as all her sisters, but instead had it upgraded to SPS-29, the long-range air/surface radar she ended up with. I have taken the liberty of modifying the existing SPS-17 found in the US parts sheet to better correspond with the SPS-29 dish, which did differ in some details.
Noticeable is the absence of any radar on her main mast. This used to hold the SPS-8B, but instead was left empty when that radar was withdrawn. The reason for this is not quite apparent.
She does carry two satellite communications antennae: one on a small lattice platform adjacent to the aft missile house; the other high up on her 'mizzen-mast'; a cone-shaped story.

My friend's father was a bosun on the Providence during the Vietnam War. He told us they once had a North Vietnamese missile fly right between the stacks while cruising off Vietnam.

I had wanted to do this ship for a long time (years ago) but quickly gave up when my interest in ships of that period waned.

Ian,let me know during what years your friend's father served, and I'll redraw it to reflect that period also! It'd be an honor to do that!
