for what is that flightdeck hump?
Honestly, not quite sure. At a guess, since it was "early days" for aircraft carriers when it was built, maybe they thought it would help with the landings.

Yeah, sounds kinda silly, I know, but I can't think of any logical reason for it. But, like I said earlier, there wasn't much experience with carriers when Hermes was designed and built. I think the only other carriers around at the time were the Vindictive, Furious, Hosho and maybe the Langley, and 3 of those 4 were conversions, not built from the keel up. That doesn't give a whole lot for the designers to work with.

The hump aft was due to NPL (National Physical Laboratory) wind tunnel testing. Air flow was of prime concern in all the early RN carriers, especially over the flight deck.

Don't forget when completed Hermes had the standard longitudinal wore arresotr geat rather than the traverese wires we are used to today.

Hermes was far from the only carrier to have that feature. Interestingly enough quite a few of the Japanese carriers did.

True, but thats largely due to the British Technical Mission that visited Japan who probably had with them details of the Hermes and Eagle (both under construction at the time) and the NPL data. It is probably down to thier help that the Japanese were able to convert Hosho so quickly and efficently. Don't forget until 1922 Britain and Japan were still bound by a Treaty and there was a sizable amount of technical aid from Britain to the IJN.

Zephyr, excellent progress and shaping up well. Roughly what era are you intending to Hermes to? Her early life or later on?

Too right cobber! The 1921 mission was crucial for the rapid development of Japanese maritime air power; and of course, the pupil went on to surpass the teacher. The Nakajima Type 3 was a Gloster design, and the Mitsubishi B1M1 was a Blackburn T7B. By the time the Hermes was sank the Japanese had undoubtably the best naval air force in the world, and their own designs reflected that. In contrast the RN was still in the doldrums, with (still) an anti carrier element like Admiral Tom 'Thumb' Phillips, who still maintained that capital ships could fight off air attacks by their own aa, and we all know what happened then.

Somewhere mid-life, I figure between 1928-34, I believe. After building, but before the reworking of the aft flightdeck and removal of the 4th 4"er. With the undated photos I've found, its hard to nail a specific year down sometimes.

Wow, that was a pretty wishy-washy answer. :?

Here are the aircraft for HMS Hermes during her first commission in the Far East 1924 to 1925.

Thanks for the planes!

I gotta ask, how did you solve the forward hull shading problem? Mine looks a bit wonky, I'll be the first to admit.

You can use the Fairey Flycatcher off my recent Hood and recolour that as its more accurate if you wish.
