Really excellent stuff... I don't know how you have the patience to do this... going through five iterations of BB-55 has really killed me!

Truly masterful, cant wait to see everything.

Anyone know what the reason for designing R turret (to use the British parlance) to have a raised barbette as if it was supposed to be superfiring over Q or X turret?

I have my moments, IJN Taiho and her never-built variants nearly killed me for example, not mentioning the CV conversion of IJN Ibuki, which I've started over a year ago and I've not managed to complete yet.

I made a quick check of my sources, but even "Anatomy of the Battleship Fuso" by Janus Skulski does not explain why. Still, the boat handling area was just below and abeam turret 4 (or R).Beign higher the gun could rotate without hitting on being impaired by them, althoug I cannot say that was the only reason.

Anyway.

One obvious reason to raise the "Q"-turret (the correct RN-designation, since there are six turrets: a-b, p-q and x-y) was to avoid damaging blasts from own fire across the beams. This proved to be one of those perennial problems facing really any dreadnought battleship/-cruiser. The higher up the guns were, the lesser risk of blasting your own boats into driftwood!

So, enough with the teasers, here is IJN Fuso as commissioned in November 1915:

another reason might be (wild guess, but possible) the ship being too stable. moving the CoG slightly up would have benefitted an lower GM, and if you have reserve........ (I believe these days the IMO state that ships GM may only be 0,03* the beam at the waterline)
