According to Friedman's, the Turret No.4 rangefinders were removed as the war dragged on because the Clevelands were badly overweight.

That thread I posted above was quite adamant that the #4 turret never, ever had a rangefinder. This picture confirms it.

Cruisers has more errors than any of the rest of St. Norman's books, in my experience.

That proves it.

The Cleveland drawings in Friedman's are surprisingly inaccurate. While they get the general layout down almost perfectly, there are fit problems et al. The drawing of "Atlanta" in 1946 incorrectly notes its hull number as "CL-90", when the actual CL-90 was USS Astoria. Pretty interesting as the rest of the cruisers seem well-documented.

IMO, the best way to portray a Cleveland is to pick a specific ship and a specific date, and then find yourself a nice, high-quality image to get all the arrangements correct. I'm working on CL-81 USS Houston (my city) and attempting to get everything done correctly, but as usual with these ships it's not easy.

There are some days when I want to start drawing AU ships so I can just make everything up!

Anyway, list of changes for next version of the as-built CL-55:

- Removal of turret no.4 rangefinders
- Change from Mk.8 to Mk.3 ranging radars on Mk.34 main battery directors

Am I correct to assume we're still undecided on the status of the SG radar on the foremast?

I think it's wrong, but I have nothing to prove it and I certainly don't know where I'd put SG instead.

Same, I can't find any photos of where it should go, and I agree that its placement on the mainmast doesn't make sense given the waveguide information. Seriously, I'm stumped. Probably just going to leave it there until better information makes itself available; it's not like I can't go back and edit it later on.

I do agree with Colo in his opinion about how to best do the drawing. That's exactly how I went about updating the Northamptons. And, co-incidentally, that's why I often update my drawings too! I get more precise info as I go along or as I dig deeper in researching a class or ship.

CL-55 has been updated, make sure to refresh. Added the 40mm Bofors twin that I missed.

The Cleveland during construction, just before inclining experiment. It clearly shows that SG radar was not on top of the conning tower. It also shows that there is a platform on top of the fore mast and what appears to be waveguide leading up to it.
