Good to see that Novice has graciously relinquished this to Zephyr, who is now doing a creditable job on it. Its still early days but if I might offer a couple of suggestions? The flair at the bow is quite distinct on the ship, but I don't think you've got it yet - the shading looks wrong. The distinctive 'hump' on the aft flight deck would benefit from not staggering the double line so much, at present it looks a bit odd. And of course the ships boats need more detail. But I'm thinking you're still busy on this and this is very much a WIP; so we'll all be looking forward to seeing it come along. :)

I won't clutter the topic by any comments on worklists, maybe this can be discussed eleswhere?

Oh, yeah... that shading on the forward hull doesn't look right, I'll agree. I've tried several different methods to try and get the distinctive shading right, none of which looked any better, and in most cases looked worse, than what I have now... so, in cases like this I am open for suggestions. Really open.

I'm not sure how else to do the aft flightdeck hump. I followed the contours exactly, at an 800% zoom and for the most part one pixel at a time, and thats how it came out. I didn't want to flatten it out, that looked wrong.

The boats, being so much in shadow on most all the pics I have are pretty much little better than a WAG, especially the davits. The center boat I drew from scratch, the left and right ones I just pulled from one of the equipment sheets.

Great progress so far. I only have two points to make;
I've looked through my sources here, including Friedman's 'British Carrier Aviation' and I'm 99.9% sure that the flightdeck does not slope downwards towards the bow. From photos it appears that the forward portion is more rounded into the hull for aerodynamic flow and this might be the source of the optical illusion.

I've made new 5.5in guns for Hood much better than these which I attach here for your use.
Good deal on the guns, thanks. The 5.5's from the current RN weapons sheet seemed a bit large.

I believe you may be correct on the flightdeck forward. When I did it the only reason I could think of for it to be angled downward was that perhaps since it was essentially a contemporary with the early Furious, which did have the flight deck angled down, perhaps they had done the same with Hermes. I corrected that on the next version, so its level.

Re: the flightdeck hump.

I think Bill meant this:

The lower drawing represents the 'hump being the same thickness all the way though it. - Doesn't sound right, but I hope it makes sense!!

Yep, that was it, Jabba put it perfectly by illustration :) With ships boats etc; you couldn't go wrong by borrowing from comparable period drawings. :)
