At the start of the 20th Century Scandinavian shipping companies were at the front in applying the Diesel engine as the motive power for merchant ships.
In line with other companies the Skisbs A/S Brazil (Lorentzen & Co.) ordered a motorship in 1913 as Penedo, from Akers Mekaniske Verskted A/S in Norway.
In 1915 the contract was sold to A/S Bonheur (Fred Olsen), and the ship was completed as Bayard, for Fred Olsen's service to South America.

In 1933 the ship was sold to S.A.Importadora y Exportadora de la Patagonia of Argentina and renamed Argentino

In 1961 the Argentino changed hands and was now owned by Navisud S.A still under the Argentinian flag.
On the 11/4/1962 the ship was wrecked off the Brazil and broke in two, sinking on the 8/5/1962.

The Union-Castle Line was formed in 1900 by joining forces between the Union Mail SS Lines and Castle Mail Packet Line, and was synonymous with the British trade with South-Africa. The company became part of the Royal Mail group of companies in 1912, and so, like other companies of the group turned to Harland & Wolff for ships and in 1930 had two motor-ships built for the Cape service. One was the Winchester Castle, and sister-ships Warwick Castle in January 1931. Both carried the Harland & Wolff trademark of two squat funnels (the front one a dummy).
In 1938 both ships were re-engined and their two funnels were replaced with a single, slightly bigger funnel.
The Warwick Castle was sunk in WW2 while acting as troop transport, and Winchester Castle soldiered on until scrapped in 1960

In 1938, to meet the Royal Mail contract conditions, the Union-Castle line had several of its passengers ships rebuilt, amongst them the Winchester Castle, which had new Diesel engines installed, the front dummy funnel removed and the lone remaining funnel enlarged. Unlike other ships in the fleet the Winchester Castle, as well as sister-ship Warwick Castle retained their original bows
