Is there any sources as to what she looked like with her fake second funnel?

Hi Karle94,

I posess a line drawing of said fake funnel- published in an older AJ Press release. It is shown as positioned directly aft of the real funnel, on top of the aircraft catapult.

Personally I´d take this with a large grain of salt - I even doubt that the crew was able to construct this structure in such a short period of time, especially under the given circumstances.

That`s just my 2 cents though...

I had a book about the Bismarck. It was an extremely detailed minute for minute recall of the entire operation, plus a very extensive prelogue, epilogue and extra materiel. It mentions the fake funnel that was made out of canvas with crewmembers sitting inside and smoking to make it look like it was actually venting exhaust. Alas, it did not work.

The order to construct the dummy funnel is indeed mentioned in some of my books and also on this extremely well researched website:

While I do believe the order was given by Lindemann and that construction work was indeed started, I think it is doubtful that the work was finished in any meaningful way. It`s usefulness seems a little doubious to me, too.
But thats just my opinion. I'm in no position to say that it wasn`t done and/or finished.


I have yet to see some credible line drawings of "Bismarck" with the "second" funnel. As I mentioned before, the only drawing that I know of can be found in an older mid-90ies AJ Press release ("Monografie Morskie No 1 "Bismarck").

Here is a quick sketch of how the fake funnel looked like according to the above mentioned book:

Still looks 100 percent like the Bismarck. I fail to see how it was supposed to fool the British. German ships looked so radically differrent from British ships to mistake them for the other. Although I might be mistaken as the Sheffield was indeed mistaken for the Bismarck because she was sailing alone.

It's also fairly hard to distinguish what ship is what from a tiny biplane some-odd thousand feet in the air...surprised there was only one case of mistaken identity. Drawing looks great, but I'm really looking forward to seeing Tirpitz and more of Deutschland / Lutzow!
