Done or nearly done on the "As Designed (1794) and As Launched (1797) USS Constitution.
USS Constitution (1794) As Designed
USS Constitution (1797) As Launched
Really went digging for descriptions and artwork from the earliest period of the Constitution prior to any significant modifications and came up with two semi conflicting descriptions primarily revolving around color...to the masts and spars. From this period there is actually very little regarding the ship's appearance however, dates of major refits are known with some description of modifications made. I stuck with 3 sources that had the best researched primary reference data and that dispelled hearsay that's been passed on as fact over time. Most sites repeat and pass on erroneous Bullsh__ from late 1800's reconstruction. Regarding color, most of the SB visible disagreement revolves around the lower mast platforms (ocre, natural, black).
1. There were no gun-port hinges except at the bow until the 1860s. They were unshipped and stowed below.
2. Hammock netting and bulwarks were filled in during construction as illustrated.
3. Guns have been deliberately omitted, the just cluttered up the drawing.
4. The Period Flag is a highly modified photo: tried to break the red, white and blue into 3 shades each to create the flowing look.
5. Went with the earliest scholarly masting and rigging example (before the Barbary War). It agrees with general American practice for the 1790's.
6. Worked on the 3-pixel rule, and adjoining black pixels. There's a lot of compromise here, some violates the SB Standards, I tried for a compromise that hopefully works. I'm finding that the SB Standards work well with modern ships well, but cause issues with older craft, creating over-sized structures. Complex rigging compounds the problems.
7. There is more rigging I want to include...after I find good reference material.
Comments and suggestions are very welcome.
