any idea why the pattern on the spotting top?
I don’t have any source to quote here but I could imagine that that form of paining could facilitate range fining for concentration firing. These ships where often employed in situation where their targets where beyond their own field of vision (over hilltops or far inland).

Very nice drawing, excellent addition to SB, Hood.
Interesting enough the 18" gun was fixed in bearing, and the gun itself was for HMS Furious (for the A turret).

A fun fact is that she operated on some occasion with HMS Gorgon... a coastal defense ship that originally was to become the Norwegian Bjorgvin class. and Bjorgvin had a maximum firing range at.. 35,660 m, so that does two vessel work together is something I find natural.

Thanks to heuhen, some minor adjustments have been made. (Liferafts added below the 12in turret, the foremast searchlight removed and a canvas bag added around the 18in gun.

I suppose the camouflaged spotting top might have been to break up the outline so German land-based gunners couldn't target the ship from her mast which would have been visible from some distance.
