Here's the Cha-1 Class Auxillary Sub Chasers. These wooden hulled boats were built in 1943-44 and were designed after trawlers. (Likely it was planned to sell them off after the war.)

If anyone has a source for the underwater hull please let me know, and I'll be happy to add it. I've only been able to find one picture, but it was extremely small, and didn't scale well.
P.S. Sorry if this is an intrusion on this thread. I felt it was the most appropriate place to post it.

All of the Axis leadership couldn't get the idea that they were actually losing the war, but the most likely explanation as to why they were designed after trawlers was because it was a design they could build cheaply and quickly under very desperate circumstances (especially by 1944). The Allies were no stranger to using this method either - the Flower corvettes were based off of ocean-going trawlers themselves.
