A black outline on the flightdeck wouldn't go amiss. Right now it looks more like a gigantic shag carpet than a wooden deck

Nah, it doesen't matter.... And please, do not mix up shaddow and shade. As long as the shading is consistent in overally, its up to the artist taste where he uses ligth, and where the dark... as long as he understands what he is doing.
