Philosophical question for you. I assume these also carried the large side pontoons in service. How would you propose to indicate that, between this and the 1171, the pontoons were not a big change? I like showing one of them in either condition, but I think we don't want to give the impression that these were massively different ships (which they were not).

I'm not sure. The LST-1171 were the first class of LST that could carry the pontoons like that on transoceanic voyages. All the previous classes had to resort to deck stowage or let another ship carry them. Note how high the lower fender is mounted on Grant County compared to Washoe county.

Fair point. If they couldn't be carried long-term, then I don't think they should be shown at all.
