Incredible.

World War I is an area I'm regrettably far behind in as far as my knowledge of naval operations (being confined more to the second world war)... as I read more about it it's funny how many interesting things they did. Aerial blimps, the first aircraft carriers, "amphibious" operations at Gallipoli, Jutland, etc.

Out of interest, what was the purpose of the picket fence along the sides of the fore flight deck?

That looks like a fun little trip to get around the superstructure. :?
Weird ideas like this is why I love the WWI and interwar period.

You've really gotta wonder what went through the designers head when he drew that hatch.

Neat, never would have guessed that.

Seconded. There's not a lot of technical information, but it does cover a lot of the different personalities and the German and British fleets. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it doesn't cover much of anything aside from the British and Germans: if you want anything on the other powers (A-H, Italy, France, Russia), a more specialized book would be necessary. But Castles of Steel does give a good entry level history to WWI at sea.

Quality. Superb drawing. And a very apt title for this excellent thread. :)

(I also recommend CoS and any other book written by Massie... esp. Peter the Great)
