I think that Esmeralda I was a sail frigate (built in Spain and captured by Adm. Cochrane), Esmeralda II a steam corvette (skipper Cmdr. A. Prat) and Esmeralda III an Elswick protected cruiser (later sold to Japan during the sino-japanese war). Esmeralda IV was an armoured cruiser, laid down in 1895. Cheers.

I herby expose myself as a total ignorant: I did not count any wooden vessels, so I actually meant the armoured cruiser of 1895 vintage.

I might still do a variation on that theme for a new AU Idea I am currently developing.

@reytuerto you're absolutely spot on, the next two I already mentioned, a river-class frigate and the current training ship. Sadly, the only depiction of the first Esmeralda I've found is a painting depicting the ship's takeover, not nearly enough to do a SB drawing.

@Garlicdesign It would be an honour to measure my mettle against any of the prolific bucketeers, so please don't desist of drawing her just because I'm doing so! I'll even give you my references if you need them.

In fact all those ships were registered "Esmeralda".
But the last two ones were BOTH "Elswick Cruiser", The second being almost an improvement (with a very narrow armoured belt) of the first.
So most of the time Esmeralda II refer to this ship. Personnally if i was talking about the several Chilean ships that were called Esmeralda i would say first Esmeralda, second Esmeralda, third Esmeralda .........and so on.

Yes, Esmeralda IV had an armoured belt which was very narrow (but with a belt, can we considered it as an armoured cruiser?), but her secondary battery was quite formidable (at least for south american waters).

I am trying with some spanish friends to find if the spanish frigate Prueba, later the peruvian Protector-Presidente, was similiar to the spanish-chilean Esmeralda. Both were frigates of 40+ guns and generally of similar age. I know that the Maritime Museum in Madrid had several plans of sailing ships (at least, of ships of the line), so there is a spark of hope for finding accurate plans of Presidente and Esmeralda.
