re Hood and Magus: Things are often clearer in hindsight, but in this case: The Nelsons were built because it was thought essential to have ships with 16in guns to counter US and Japanese ships. However, the British 15in fired a 1938lb shell, not far short of the light shell adopted for Nelson, and ...

Sumeragi said "I'm pointing out factually wrong designation/information (such as there being no single smokestack idea)." If by that you mean that no KGV design was produced with a single funnel, I'm afraid you are mistaken. The Staff requested a single funnel option at a very early stage in the des...

Krakatoa said " Once the 4.5" DP gun is available the destroyers armed with those become much more useful." I assume you meant the single mount? The 4.5in Mk V fitted in the Z and C classes was (apart from the barrel and its fittings) identical to the 4.7in Mk XXII fitted in the T to W classes; hand...

@Krakatoa I've had a look at the drawings in Warship 2, and while there is some sheer forward, it's not large and the drawings are reproduced too small to be sure about any differences in the whole series. In favour of 'zero' bow - H3b had forward turret on a high barbette, so could fire forward eve...

A very small point, but d'Eyncourt's sketch shows the muzzles of B turret, so B is offset to starboard.

Flashman said "I read that the Naval Aid Bill of 1913 was to fund 3 battleships of the most modern pattern (read, Queen Elizabeth class), but I had assumed they would just be 3 additional vessels!" Your assumption is nearly correct. The Canadian Naval Aid Bill failed to pass the Senate in late 1913....

As Hood says, looks good, BUT This proposal was 1938, and was then a serious one, so this is a "neverwere". The 5.25in were ordered. But no chance of STAAG, which was a post-war gun, by which time the Hawkins machinery would be worn out. The quad 2pdr are more the mark. Also a quad 2pdr weighed abou...

"head towards vertical funnels and the later bridge style when considering the dates of construction"
I agree with that, though I don't think it improves the look of it.

@Blackbuck "deviate from the original Thurston design " Those were interesting comments. Have you seen any other diagrams? All I have seen were from Brassey's Naval Annual, all of which had raked funnels, except that I have seen one from the Hiraga Archive 1928 IIRC of Vickers Design 866, a more con...

Battle of River Plate 13 Dec 1939: No RN Towns class there. Admiral Scheer (not a battleship) was refitting at Wilhelmshaven.
Stick to aircraft :)
