Fabulous work Bombhead, but the Jet Blast Deflectors (JBDs) on Ark Royal are all wrong, I suspect as a result of defective source material. She had four panel JBDsat the rear end of water cooled deck plated and no CALE gear, instead hydraulic chocks for either Phantoms or Buccaneers/Gannets were fit...

Very good progress indeed. Jungle RAF choppers and Scimitars with 1,000lb bombs! Cool stuff, this is was carrier warfare is about. You can keep all your Supercarriers! Great top-down views too, I've only ever done one and its not easy! Sorry, no crabs visible in these pictures. Perhaps you were ref...

Interesting historical sidebar re Centaur's last upgrade. In June 63 she began a five month refit at Pompey during which her last CO Captain Steiner joined the ship. He wanted the ship to recieve the type 965 radar, as otherwise her radar fit would be too outdated for the upcoming commission (she ha...

Note also that as completed, Centaur had hydraulic catapults (as did Albion and Bulwark), and although the above deck fittings were the same, the steam catapults had a longer track so the CALE gear would have to be repositioned nearer to the lift. Her two sisters never recieved steam cats or JBDs.

JBDs (Jet Blast Deflectors) were installed on British carriers from the mid to late 50s onwards as Steam Catapults were fitted, and the original pattern was for a steel plate that could be raised and retracted hydraulically behind the catapult to protect deck crew from jet blast. Aircraft that were ...

Swiftsure's refit was cancelled halfway through, at which point her original armament had been removed but not yet replaced (planned fit was identical to the Tiger class, two twin 6"/50 mk26 turrets in 'A' and 'Y' positions and three twin 3"/70 mk6 in 'B', 'P' and 'Q' positions). Her new bridge and ...

One minor correction needed on the drawing; the starboard extension to the island below the funnel wasn't fitted until her 1956-58 refit when she also recieved her Steam catapults. Neither of her sisters recieved this modification (or steam cats). Also the CALE gear on her catapults (the rollers set...

The aircraft shown are correct for the period, though as I said earlier in this guise (axial decked) Centaur never actually embarked any aircraft. She ran first of class trials and then immediately afterwards was taken in hand for conversion to an angled deck carrier. Curiously though, whilst both h...

Altough I quite agree with what Obi Wan had just said, there are two tings. One HMS Bulwark in some part of her career carried the letter 'O' not 'Z', and HMS Albion was 'O' before being 'A'. AFIK HMS Ark Royal was allways 'R' http://www.davidburt.co.uk/images/hms_albion.jpg HMS Albion -'Z' is clea...
